The Necessity and Selection Methods of HVAC System at Schools

Walking into the classroom and taking a glance at the classroom, you may find that there are generally 60 students in it. That’s the normal phenomenon in China. Sometimes it smells in classroom because every child exhales carbon dioxide and some students don't pay attention to their individual sanitary, making the classroom smelly. In such a crowded space, it’s strongly believed that every person won’t feel well. Opening windows is the common way to ensure fresh air circulation at school. That would be adorable to do so in spring and autumn when the temperature is pleasing. But it won’t work when we turn on central heating and air conditioner in summer and winter. Hence, opening windows is a common but not well-round way.

Even so, the indoor air is still dirty. After visiting several schools to have surveys, the content of carbon dioxide in the classroom in general has reached around 2500PPM, even more than 3500PPM (outdoor carbon dioxide concentration is about 350PPM, it’s harmful to human body if exceeding 1000PPM). In addition to the peculiar smell in the air, the main problems in the classroom air quality is a lack of oxygen, which seriously affect the child's growth and intellectual development.

Kindergartens, schools, training center are usually crowded. People there usually have strong workload so that have to stay for a long time indoors. Therefore good indoor air quality is a guarantee to children’s mental development and is the necessary conditions for the healthy growth. It’s an urgent need to install new air circulating system and enterprise should be responsible for paying attention to the air quality in classrooms.

In China, there is a big difference about education condition among different cities. It’s difficult to require all the classrooms around the country to install HVAC system. However only several developed areas has the ability to install it. We call on relevant departments to focus on this problem.

As a responsible enterprise with over 56 years of developing ventilation, Deflecto now offer some selection methods in the following for your reference:

1.    The fresh air volume in the classroom depends on the number of students and the different age group.

Kindergarten and Primary School: 15M3/H per person

Middle school, high school and college: 30M3/H per person

For example, there are 60 people in a classroom. For kindergarten and primary school, the new air volume should be 900M3/H. And for ,middle school, high school and college, it should be 1800 M3/H.

2.    Selection methods of HVAC system in kindergarten and schools.

Schools are places where children learn and absorb knowledge, which means that it’s required to install HVAC system with large air volume and low noise. Normally exhaust fan may produce lots of noise and has a short life, but it’s not suitable to install it in the classroom even though it can help to circulate air to some extents.

3.    In the northern cold region, it is suggested that schools are equipped with heat recovery of central fresh air system to ensure good air at the same time also to  maintain the stability of indoor temperature. In the south, people can use HVAC system without heat transfer.

4.    There are two main issues should be paid attention to. One is new air delivered should be as smooth as possible on the new wind pipe, making students of each region breathe the fresh air. The other is one must pay attention to safety and convenience whiling using such system.
